WALLAWONG’s Sienna Newton soared to a new personal best in the Women’s Long Jump T38 Final during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to finish fifth in a quality international field.

The 19-year-old, a product of the Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre, endured a long journey to represent her nation in the green and gold.

According to the website Australian Athletics, Sienna battled brain cancer as a child, which required surgery, and she was left with left-sided weakness.

Despite continuing to compete in able-bodied events throughout her childhood, she eventually received a para-assessment that classified her as T38.

Federal Member for Lyne Alison Penfold wished Wallawong resident Sienna Newton the very best as she prepared to represent Australia in the T38 Long Jump event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

She said, regardless of the result in Glasgow, Sienna had already made her community very proud.

“We know she will give her absolute best and, regardless of the result, she has already made us immensely proud,” she said.

Ms Penfold acknowledged that Sienna had demonstrated remarkable dedication, perseverance and resilience throughout her sporting journey.

“Sienna’s achievements are an inspiration to our community, and we are incredibly proud to see her wearing the green and gold,” Ms Penfold said.

Ms Penfold acknowledged the dedication of Sienna’s family, coach and support team, whose encouragement and commitment helped make the achievement possible.

She said Sienna was a wonderful role model for young Australians, demonstrating that hard work, perseverance and self-belief could overcome obstacles and lead to remarkable success.
