Tea Gardens’ Robert Smith awarded OAM for lifetime of community service

A TEA Gardens man whose commitment to serving others has spanned decades has been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours, receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

Robert Smith was honoured for his service to the community through emergency response welfare organisations, adding another achievement to a remarkable record of public service.

State Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington congratulated Mr Smith on the national recognition.

“Congratulations to Robert Smith of Tea Gardens on being honoured with an Order of Australia Medal (OAM),” Ms Washington said.

Mr Smith founded the NSW Fire Brigades Relief and Welfare Fund in 1988 and served as a board member for the following 38 years.

His work supported firefighters and their families through times of hardship and crisis, while he also held senior leadership roles within Fire and Rescue NSW.

The OAM acknowledges decades of dedication to emergency services, community welfare and public service.

Ms Washington said Mr Smith’s contribution extended well beyond emergency response organisations.

“I recognised him recently for serving 50 years as an authorised marriage celebrant, having co-founded the Association of Civil Marriage Celebrants NSW & ACT,” she said.

Over five decades, Mr Smith has helped countless couples mark one of the most significant days of their lives, while also supporting communities through emergencies and difficult circumstances.

His service has touched many lives across New South Wales and beyond.

Ms Washington said the honour was richly deserved.

“Put simply, Robert’s been honoured for a life of service – saving lives and making smiles,” she said.

The OAM recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service and commitment to their communities, and Mr Smith’s contribution stands as a shining example of volunteerism, leadership and dedication to others.
