REFERRING to the article ‘Marine health and coastline in focus’ (NOTA, 27/8/26) and the comments made by Mr Iain Watt, I would suggest that his information may not be correct and that the seas are not rising.
Looking at charts showing the Monthly Sea Levels (MSL) at Fort Denison issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) where the first recording showed the MSL in May 1914 as 1.11 metres.
Looking at the chart for December 2024, it shows a height of 1.08 metres.
Accordingly, 110 years from the first BOM recorded in 1914 to the very latest recorded MSL by the BOM.
The MSL at Fort Denison was 3cm lower at the last record in 2024 than it was at the first record in 1914.
I understand that the BOM’s Fort Denison records are considered the most honest and reliable in the entire Pacific Basin.
I would like to ask Mr Watt where he obtained his information.
