FROM recent reports black drummer, also known as rock blackfish, are keen to rumble off the rocks anywhere between Fingal and Rocky Point.
Best baits include fresh or salted cunjevoi, or bread and prawns tossed into a bread berley trail.
A 2/0 hook and just enough lead to get you into the strike zone, which is around mid-water.
Drummer have no manners and will gobble down the bait before charging back into the closest rock crevice.
The trick is to prevent the determined fish from reaching home base and this is best done with a relatively stiff rod, strong back and strong line over 10kg.
The technique is simple – when the drummer pulls, you pull harder.
Best spots I have found include Boulder Bay and the Tommy Rocks in front of the Outer Lighthouse.
Fishing off the rocks is a dodgy game, particularly when the sea is rising and waves continually crash around you.
Be sure to wear a life jacket and have a Plan B if you are unfortunate enough to be washed in.
It is a really good idea to fish with a mate.
Black drummer are an underestimated table fish which are ideal for chowders and marinaras.
