MORE women in Bulahdelah will have easier access to free breast cancer screening when the BreastScreen NSW mobile screening van visits the town from 16 July to 24 July from 8.40am to 4pm.
The mobile clinic will be located outside Bulahdelah Community Hospital on Richmond Street, with one female radiographer working to provide the free mammograms.
Mammograms are free for eligible women without the need for a doctor’s referral.
BreastScreen NSW Hunter New England Manager Rebecca Delaporte said regular screening plays a key role in detecting breast cancer early.
“Detecting breast cancer early increases your chance of survival while reducing the likelihood of invasive treatment, such as mastectomy or chemotherapy,” Ms Delaporte said.
“Around 90 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history.
“This is why breast cancer screening is so important for all eligible women.”
Ms Delaporte said bringing the service to Bulahdelah removes barriers that can prevent women from attending their recommended screening appointments.
“Bringing these vital services to Bulahdelah means more local women can be screened.
“Life gets busy and we want women to make their health a priority.”
Appointments are free, take less than 20 minutes and are recommended every two years for women aged 50 to 74, although all women over 40 are eligible to attend.
BreastScreen NSW recommends Aboriginal women begin screening from age 40.
Women with a family history of breast cancer are encouraged to discuss their individual screening needs with their GP, while anyone experiencing breast symptoms should seek medical advice without delay.
The mobile screening van is also equipped with a lift system to assist women with mobility issues or disability.
Women with additional support needs are encouraged to advise staff when making their booking.
The Hunter New England Breast Screen service travels to 52 destinations throughout the region.
After Bulahdelah the mobile screening van will visit Murrurundi, Scone, Taree and other locations in the region.
To make a free appointment with BreastScreen NSW, visit the BreastScreen NSW website or call 13 20 50.
