Walking Football on offer for Tea Gardens’ active seniors

FOOTBALL options in Tea Gardens are expanding from Saturday 10 May, with the introduction of a Walking Football program.

Tea Gardens Soccer Club, already well-known for its thriving youth programs, has just launched a new initiative aimed at a different crowd – active adults aged 50 and over.

“We’re really excited to bring Walking Football to Tea Gardens,” club representative Shane Reynolds told News Of The Area.

“It’s not just about staying active, it’s about connecting with others, having a laugh, and being part of something special.

“Walking football is aimed at men and women of a certain age (50+), but open to all, [including] anyone looking for slow-paced exercise.

“Walking Football is a low-impact, team-based exercise where players always have at least one foot on the ground.

“Aside from following the Laws of the Game, other aspects include walking only, no headers, and no kicking the ball above head-height.”

According to the Northern NSW Football Association, national Walking Football programs are designed in partnership with Active Ageing and member federations, to focus on passing rather than speed or running.

“The focus is on fun and making friends, as matches are played with modified formats of five or six-a-side, the pitch is smaller, and game times are shorter.

“Regular games are to be held at Memorial Park on Witt Street, Tea Gardens, and the sessions are open to men and women aged 50 and above, regardless of skill level or experience, with the Club providing all the equipment – participants just need to bring their enthusiasm and a willingness to give it a go.”

Northern NSW Football’s Walking Football program co-ordinator Serena Carter will be visiting the Tea Gardens club on Saturday for a “come and try” day, from 12:30pm.

This will be around the Tea Gardens Soccer Club Canteen on Memorial Park in Witt Street.
