MEMBERS of Tea Gardens Lions Club continue their efforts to improve the area and help others, with several ongoing projects in the works.

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, ‘Walk for Breast Cancer’ is being undertaken by club members to raise awareness and funds for research into the terrible disease.

The walk is 58km because an average of 58 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every day –  including one in eight women – according to official statistics.

“The toll on the body can be challenging; every day is an unknown,” said one local battling breast cancer, who preferred to remain unnamed.

“Coming to terms with what is going on with your body and the emotional rollercoaster you ride is something else.

“Fortunately, I have a wonderful husband, family and friends who make me laugh, let me cry, and understand.”

The realities of breast cancer treatment are known only to those battling it.

Every patient reacts differently after chemotherapy treatments, which last at least 18 weeks.

It’s not necessarily a ‘lump’ that may signal breast cancer. It may be a well-hidden mass, making it important to get checked regularly – especially if there’s a family history of cancer, or any abnormal pain.

Lions Dog Park, off Booner Street in Hawks Nest, is also nearing completion, with the covered seating inside the park now going in, and more concrete areas on the way.

A Lions Fashion Show on 1 November will have an ‘Op Shop’ theme this year. Proceeds will support victims of domestic violence.

“New houses have been built for DV victims,” fashion show organiser, Carole Richards told NOTA.

“Some women arrive with just the clothes on their backs, and the houses also need to be kitted out with useful things like white goods.

“This show aligns with two of Lions Australia’s main pillars, being the causes of youth and humanitarian aid – this time in our own backyard.

“As a Lions Club, we’ve decided that this year’s show will aid that cause – ticket sales, raffle money and Tim’s Bags will go to support DV victims.”
