Mysterious solar‑powered boxes appear across Medowie

Residents across Medowie have been left puzzled by a series of new solar‑powered boxes appearing on residential streets, with no clear indication of who installed them or what purpose they serve.

The boxes, each fitted with a small solar panel, have sparked lively online discourse, with locals trading theories ranging from practical to tongue‑in‑cheek.

Some initially assumed the units were part of an NBN upgrade, but that idea was quickly dismissed. “I was under the impression it was NBN,” one resident wrote, only for another to reply, “I talked to Ausgrid. Nope.”

With the usual utility providers ruled out, speculation has ranged widely. Online commenters have suggested everything from community battery banks to “toxic chemical storage cabinets”, “solar‑powered Lego blocks”, and even “Dr Who’s phone box.”

One joked that it might be a “weather manipulator”, while another suggested “public toilets”.

Port Stephens Council has confirmed to News Of The Area that the boxes are not council infrastructure.

In an email, a spokesperson said a company called XDC “might be involved” and clarified that road reserves, where the boxes are being installed, can legally be used by government agencies and private utility providers.

The spokesperson added that under the Federal Telecommunications Act, licensed utility providers have authority to install infrastructure on road reserves, sometimes without council approval or notification.

News Of The Area has contacted XDC Networks for confirmation but has not yet received a response.

For now, the mystery remains unsolved.
