THE most-recent edition of Port Stephens News of the Area pointed to just how far governments have become isolated from the wishes and needs of the local community.
Your front-page article ‘Troubled Path’, and Anne Ronan’s Letter to the Editor, both expressed frustration and dismay at the funds being spent on an unwanted pathway.
This was followed by the politicians’ photo-op announcement of a $275m upgrade to Nelson Bay Road.
Yet, despite all this fanfare, most residents would seem to be much happier if more money was available to address the sorry state of local roads.
The headline on your article ‘Road condition still the main cause for complaints across Port Stephens’ neatly summarises the problem – a problem which could be addressed much more quickly if a portion of those funds were diverted from politicians’ pet projects to address the needs and priorities of the local community.
