FOR livestock producers across the Stroud and Wootton districts, spring is one of the busiest and most important times of the farming calendar, making preparation now the key to success over the months ahead.
To help local graziers get ready, NSW Local Land Services (LLS) is hosting two Livestock Roadshow: Spring Joining Preparations workshops, bringing producers together to share practical advice, hear from industry experts and connect with neighbours.
The workshops will cover a range of seasonal topics, including animal health, feeding and supplementation, pasture management, feed budgeting, seasonal outlooks, livestock marketing and preparing herds and flocks for joining.
Local beef producer Steve Bignell said no matter what the forecasts predict, planning ahead is essential.
“While you listen to the weather forecasts, they can be wrong and it’s important to plan for whatever weather you might get,” Steve said.
“We were told we’d have a dry winter but we didn’t.
“Even with a good season and lots of pasture growth there can be problems with things such as scouring.
“You must plan for the worst but be prepared for the best.”
NSW Local Land Services’ Sam Harwood said the roadshow is designed to give producers practical information they can apply immediately on their own properties.
“We’ll cover the practical ground: animal health, feeding and supplementation, pasture management and feed budgeting for spring, seasonal and climate outlooks, marketing options, and getting your herd ready for joining,” Mr Harwood said.
“But honestly, half the value is just getting off the place, having a cuppa with the neighbours, and swapping notes after a tough season.
“There’s plenty of time for discussion and questions.”
The first workshop will be held at Stroud School of Arts on Thursday, 20 August, from 10am to 1pm, followed by a second session at Wootton Community Hall on Friday, 21 August, also from 10am to 1pm.
Morning tea and lunch will be provided.
