Bitou Busters begin season with strong turnout

ELEVEN enthusiastic Bitou Buster volunteers braved unseasonable cold and strong winds at their first working bee of the year to tackle invasive weeds in the bushland beside Peter Sinclair Gardens in Hawks Nest.

“The session proved to be anything but gentle for new recruit Brian, who was quickly introduced to the challenge of removing entrenched asparagus fern,” said spokesperson Adrienne Ingram.

“Working in the sheltered bush, the group soon warmed up as they filled bag after bag with the invasive plant, many of which already bore green and red berries on their long fronds.

“Volunteers also thinned fishbone fern along the nearby track, helping to restore the health of the native bushland.

“The volunteers warmed themselves up over coffee and conversation at Benchmark on Booner, the group’s sponsor.”

Coordinator Trish Blair said it was a productive morning and a great effort by everyone involved.

The next monthly Saturday Bitou Busters session will take place in three weeks, on 18 April, and new volunteers are always welcome.
