THE Myall River Action Group (MRAG) is advocating the deepening of the whole length of the lower Myall River (NOTA, ‘Urgent action needed on Myall’s shoals’, Page 6, 8/10/26).
This “dredge, dredge, dredge” philosophy reminds me of the “drill, drill, drill” philosophy of short-term exploitation.
Why tamper with nature?
Why not select boats that suit the waterways rather than change the river to suit extravagant cruisers?
Why advocate for increased boating traffic into the Ramsay-listed Myall Lakes when their existence evolved from pristine seclusion?
Is the MRAG about river health or about cruising possibilities?
MidCoast Council appears to believe the latter. It stated in NOTA that short-cut dredging had nothing to do with river purity (but with sand transfer) and that activists wanted cruiser navigation through the short-cut as a by-product.
