FISHING for luderick has always been a bit of a mystery to me.
Sitting for hours, on a hard rock, staring at a float, wishing for it to disappear under the surface.
Luderick fishers are a different breed.
On one thing they all agree – Don’t tell anyone where you collect the bait of precious green weed, or cabbage!
Note: Not that sort of cabbage.
I find it strange that to catch a fish you use a vegetable!
Is there another fish in the ocean that can be caught on a vegetable? A carrot? A potato?
What I do know is that fishing for luderick gives much pleasure to many.
A recent convert is a friend, Cindy Braun, who experienced the thrill of the disappearing float. This resulted in a fine catch of fish up to an impressive 43cm.
New to the game, Cindy had the first requirement – the willingness to learn.
She could not have had a better teacher than Laurie Chadder, who has that unique ability to be able to catch anything.
An extensive knowledge and a tolerant approach make a good teacher.
Cindy is hooked, so you may find her perched up on a rock along the Nelson Bay Breakwall with her rod bending over and a big smile on her face.
Fishing is a funny game.
