Lady Hawks back in the swing after delayed season

MEMBERS of the Lady Hawks League Tag team can be seen at the Hawks Nest Golf Club on Wednesday nights, raising the funds needed to keep them on the field.

Last week, players Annee Perry and Destinee Carey were joined by Hawks Vice President Pete Evans and coach Alex Sinclair.

“Funds… help cover the costs of… gear, jerseys, registration, and more,” Annee told News Of The Area.

The women are now sporting new club polos, which have distinctive pink collars and special Lady Hawks logos on the back along with a list of local sponsors.

The jerseys debuted at last week’s home game, which was only the fourth game of the season.

Despite the competition starting in April, Autumn’s rainstorms saw one match abandoned and two rescheduled for late August.

They have only faced three of the seven opponents in their competition, and are itching to get on the field for their next game, scheduled for Stockton.

“Despite only four games, we kept the Aberglasslyn Ants at a relatively low four tries last week,” Annee said. “They are second on the ladder and we are sixth.”

Destinee added that sickness had impacted the Lady Hawks.

“Other teams usually have a whole round of substitutes to swap out throughout the game, but we have also had a lot of sick players, and usually do not have any subs, so our ladies have ended up playing the whole 50 minutes.”

Alex agrees that having more substitutions would have made a difference.

“We could have rested players and put up a stronger show against the likes of Aberglasslyn,” she said.

“We are seeing quite strong interest from the girls currently playing in the Junior Hawks U16s team, so we are confident the team can continue on for next year, too.”

After Stockton, the Lady Hawks are back home at Myall Park on Saturday 21 June to play Clarence Town and Thornton-Beresfield, respectively.
