Seniors Tennis Tournament draws players to Hawks Nest

HAWKS Nest has served up another sporting attraction, with 30+ players signing on for the 2026 Tennis Seniors NSW (TSNSW) Seniors Tournament.

Competitors travelled from across the region and interstate, combining their passion for tennis with a weekend on the picturesque Myall Coast.

Among them was Greg Hunt, who made the journey from Canberra, while other players travelled from Branxton, Newcastle, Cundletown and Buladelah to join the competition.

“It’s lotsa fun! When you get to our age you win just by turning up,” said player Rhonda Yarnold.

Despite its name, the senior’s tournament welcomes players aged 30 and over, encouraging a smooth transition from junior and younger adult competition into the senior tennis circuit.

Myall Park Tennis Club Tournament Director, Sam Leggat told NOTA, “It’s designed to capture all of these players around NSW.

“So many retired people just jump in their caravan and go week by week, travelling around and playing a game of tennis.

“It’s a big social event.”

But for some, the socialising takes a back seat to the scoreboard.

“You do get your real serious players as well,” said Mrs Leggat.

“If you do really well in NSW you get to represent NSW, play against other states, and eventually represent Australia.”

Playing abroad in 2026 for Tennis Seniors Australia means players compete in the  ITF World Tennis Masters Tour events and championships in Portugal and Turkey.

Saturday’s program featured mixed doubles and separate women’s and men’s competitions, while Sunday’s women’s and men’s doubles bring players together across age groups.

The coastal setting continues to be a major drawcard, with Hawks Nest offering visitors an opportunity to enjoy the area’s beaches, waterways and relaxed village atmosphere between matches.

Shayne Franklin from Branxton said, “It’s great to come to Hawks Nest for the weekend.”

Beyond the courts, visiting competitors and their travelling companions also provide a welcome boost to the local community.
