THE Pindimar Markets will take on added significance this year as they fall on Saturday, 24 October – the same day as United Nations Day; an international occasion celebrating peace, human rights and cooperation.
United Nations Day commemorates the anniversary of the UN Charter coming into force in 1945, recognising the importance of communities working together towards a more peaceful and inclusive world.
While the Pindimar Markets may be a world away from the United Nations headquarters in New York, the values of cooperation, inclusion and community spirit are equally relevant.
Local stallholder, 13-year-old Alice Rapley, reflected on the coincidence and considered the relevance of her contribution at the markets.
“A lot of families come from places as far as Sydney who don’t get to see animals and it brings the community together,” Miss Rapley told NOTA.
Miss Rapley has been a familiar face at the Pindimar Markets almost since their inception, alongside her family which, over the years, has included a vast range of farm animals.
In addition to the alpacas Brandy, Voddy and Pimms, visitors to the upcoming markets can expect some new arrivals.
“This year the Petting Zoo will have newly hatched chicks, rainbow chickens – little silkies colourfully dyed, most likely sheep with a baby lamb, and some ducks,” Miss Rapley said.
