MEMBERS of a new Pindimar/Bundabah gardening group enjoyed a colourful spring outing recently, visiting the garden of local resident Drew Martin, whose passion for gardening was inspired by his father.
Having grown up with a green thumb, Mr Martin developed an appreciation for plants and the enjoyment that comes from nurturing a garden.
Recently retired, Mr Martin devotes his time to the wide array of vegetables and plants that flourish on the acreage he shares with his wife, Judy, overlooking picturesque Pindimar Bay.
The gardening group is a casual collective of people who meet up fortnightly to participate in various horticulture-related activities.
Coordinator Margarete Lethorne chose Mr Martin’s garden for a tour because of its variety, seasonal colour and the opportunity for members to glean practical gardening tips.
“We are lucky to have someone in this area so knowledgeable about plants, and especially those native to this area,” Ms Lethorne said.
“We’re building a community of people interested in sharing plants, seeds, and produce; and growing, harvesting and cooking their own food.
“Our focus is on keeping it local rather than buying commercial produce.”
A particular highlight was Mr Martin’s kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos), putting on a spectacular spring display.
“Plant them in well-composted, free-draining soil and fertilise with poultry manure pellets,” Mr Martin said.
“Water them thoroughly and place mulch around the plants.
“Cut dead stems back to the base and periodically remove decaying or diseased leaves and flowers.
Kangaroo paw flowers make excellent cut arrangements, lasting two to three weeks in a vase.”
Morgan Sanderson, of the Salty Blooms florist in Tea Gardens, admired the Kangaroo Paw.
“Drew’s Kangaroo Paws are the best,” she said.
