Community invited to nominate for Aboriginal Reference group

INDIGENOUS community members are invited to nominate for MidCoast Council’s Aboriginal Reference Group.

The reference group provides an opportunity for an Aboriginal voice to guide Council on strategic decisions that affect the Aboriginal community.

“The key focus of this group is it improve outcomes for Aboriginal people in the MidCoast region,” Council’s Manager of Libraries, Community and Cultural Services, Alex Mills said.

“Members will consult with community and provide feedback to the community on the group’s meeting outcomes.

“The reference group will also provide Council with advice and direction on cultural and language protocols.”

The committee includes Councillors, representatives of the Local Aboriginal Land Councils and the four Aboriginal working parties from Gloucester, Great Lakes, Taree and Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest.

Council is seeking expressions of interest from Aboriginal community members with a focus on Elders, Traditional Owners, Aboriginal young people aged 18-plus and Gathang knowledge holders from across the MidCoast Council area.

The Aboriginal Reference Group meets four times a year.
