MASTERS-AGE swimmers from across the state congregated at Tea Gardens pool on Saturday, 14 February, to compete in the annual carnival hosted by the Myall Masters Swimming Club.
The event has grown in recent years to become one of the most popular and well-attended Masters swim meets in the state, this year attracting 28 clubs from all over NSW and a record 183 entries.
Myall Masters spokeswoman Christine Dunning praised the “incredible efforts of club members and volunteers” in fostering the “happy atmosphere that prevailed over the weekend”.
“The meticulous planning and leadership undertaken by Committee Member Steve Rees as Meet Director certainly set the scene for yet another successful Myall Masters Carnival,” she said.
“A special mention to our Club Social Secretary Kerry Patterson and her team who prepared lunches for the 30 officials and organised an ongoing smorgasbord of complimentary slices, tea and coffee throughout the day for all who attended.
“Sue Estens, our pool announcer, did such a fine job keeping the competitors well informed with her directions over the PA system.
“A big thank you to club member Di Roberts, who arrived back from overseas the previous day and volunteered to help at the recorders’ tent all day.”
Myall Masters swimmers competed admirably, placing second in the overall club standings.
Maitland took out the top spot while Warringah finished in third place.
Head Coach Sharon Taylor was pleased with the results of all local swimmers, noting that style and technique have greatly improved this season across the board.
New club member Colin Kindred made an excellent debut in the 80-84 age category competing in four swims, two being butterfly events.
Sensational results were achieved by Christine Sefton (55-59 age group) and Leon Bobako (75-79 age group), each winning all four of their events and being named Women’s and Men’s Champions in their respective age groups.
Christine registered a sensational time of 41.78 in her 50m Breaststroke event, finishing 6.57 seconds faster than second place.
Joanne Collins, Sharon Taylor and Walter Hannibal all placed overall second in their respective age groups, while Linda Stubbs placed third.
The club also excelled in team events.
“In the four 4x50m relays, our two men’s relay teams enjoyed the camaraderie of racing against one another in their age categories and achieved first and second place, while our women’s relay team looked fantastic in a very strong field in their age category and achieved first place,” Christine Dunning added.
She also highlighted the non-club members and community stalwarts who made the annual event possible.
“A well-deserved thank you to the Tea Gardens pool staff, under the supervision of Cathy Haynes who had the pool and surrounds in tip top condition for the day and to the Lions Club who once again provided a delicious barbecue for all involved,” Christine said.
