FRIENDS at the Myall University of the Third Age believe 92-year-old Marilyn Taylor is living proof that staying active, both mentally and physically, can help to ward off the ailments typically associated with advancing age.
Dementia Awareness Week ran from 21-27 September and some of the key messages shared encouraged ageing Australians to stay mentally engaged and challenged, physically active and stimulated, and to remain social and avoid loneliness.
Myall U3A spokesperson Jeanette Hart said Marilyn has been a participating member in the U3A art groups off and on for many years.
“She has battled health issues but has risen above them to continue living a full active life,” Ms Hart said.
“Marilyn has completed lessons in watercolour, acrylic, and pastels.
“She really loved doing her Cranky Duck with tutor Mandy Craig.
“This will be the first time that Marilyn has exhibited at the annual art show on the October long weekend.
“She is both nervous and excited.”
Marilyn said she looked forward to attending the group activities.
“I love coming to the art group with friendly, like-minded people,” Marilyn said.
“They are so encouraging and helpful.”
The U3A organisation offers many activities for the community to be involved in including Art, Friends of Film, Spanish, Gardening, Psychology, Choir, Ukelele and more.
Its Annual Art Show will be held this October long weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, 3-4 October, at the Hawks Nest Community Hall.
“The Art Exhibition showcases what the group has learnt in workshops and tutorials throughout the year,” Ms Hart said.
“There are over 50 artists registered in the course, with many displaying their work for the community to view and purchase.
“It’s the community event of the year and includes the local Red Cross Association selling tea, coffee, and cakes to raise money for their charities.
“There will be delicious homemade cakes and slices for the community to purchase while helping local charities. “Local author Ray Keipert will also be selling the four books he has written and The Grange resident, Lee Clayton, will have her music CD that she has composed for sale.
Ms Hart said that the 2025 exhibition had been the Art Group’s most successful to date, with more than 500 locals and visitors attending.
The group will raffle three creations by local artists Christina Reid, Mandy Craig and Ros Jones in a Tombola, which will be drawn on Sunday afternoon before the exhibition closes at 3pm.
